Senate Meetings
At the senate meetings I did my best to try to make it into a welcoming environment for everyone. Especially, when it came to people speaking at the podium I would try my best to make sure that the students felt as comfortable as possible. I would do so by smiling at them to give off a welcoming feel as well as leaning in to show interest and nodding at them when the person speaking at the podium said something that was a bit more controversial.
When it came to voting, I would keep the best interest of students in mind. If it was an unpopular piece of legislation that was brought up to the floor I made sure that I had as much information on it before I would make a decision that would impact the student body. Furthermore, if I felt like a controversial piece of legislation needed more attention I would willingly ask to be excused from class and work to be able to discuss the importance of the piece. Finally, I wasn't afraid to speak up and voice concerns over what I felt was unjust. Even if voicing the students concerns made me unpopular I still made sure that they were heard regardless of the repercussions that I would take. |
Committees
During my time in ASUCR I was in two committees under the external office. The two being Lobby Corps and the City relations committee. Both focused on helping students by interacting with outside forces outside of UCR.
My time in Lobby Corps is mainly encompassed by learning about the actions that UCOP/UC regents do and how it affects prices and structures within ASUCR. I was even able to have the privilege to lobby in Sacramento to increase funding on education, mental health, etc. In my City Relations committee, I would make great efforts to attend and participate in events, so I can help create a bridge between city council members and the students of UCR. Because this committee was getting restructured, I would put much more emphasis on my attendance/participation. This meant that if I had to leave work early or study a little less, I would do it so that the committee can have a stronger voice. |
Past Events
As senator I have hosted two events within the same quarter something of which is unprecedented. With a lot of work and approval I was able to make it possible. One of the requirements for the VPCIA is to make at least two events within the one quarter. As shown, I have experience in doing that.
The first event was meant to help diversify the type of people in ASUCR. Like previously stated diversity was and is still a main concern for me. The event functioned as a stand alone and as a tour to as many clubs to promote involvement within ASUCR. The second event was meant to function as a way to relieve stress. It was a movie night that had also focused on bring attention to the endangered species and how our ecological footprint affects them. Other events were planned for spring quarter but were sadly canceled due to COVID-19. I still however intend to continue student engagement! |
